Welcome to the web site of St. Finbarr’s Athletic Club.
Since our founding in Cork in 1951, St. Finbarr’s AC has played a leading
role in the south of Ireland in promoting and developing athletics at all
levels from junior to masters categories, and across the disciplines from
cross country to track and road racing.
The primary purpose of this web site is to act as an information
source for club members, both here in Ireland and abroad, and for the
wider athletics community and the sporting public in general.
Yours in Sport,
Paul Dinan (Chairperson) & the Committee of St. Finbarr’s A.C.
President’s Welcome 2008
Dear Members and Friends of St. Finbarr’s A.C.
We recently elected our officers and committee to organize and guide
the Club for the next twelve months. All clubs like to look forward and
plan for the future. Sometimes it is nice to look back to see where it
all started. St. Finbarrs’A.C.
was founded in 1951 by Canon Cashman, John O’Connell Dick Day and Paddy Hennessy. Only Paddy Hennessy remains with us today. All of the other founder members have
gone to their eternal reward, RIP.
Paddy Hennessy is always interested in the activities of the
club. We are grateful to those
far seeing men who started from a very small beginning to arrive at a now
very successful club today. The
club have produced county, Munster, National, European and World
Champions. Dozens of St. Finbarr’s
A.C. athletes have presented the country. It is a great honour to wear the green vest of
Ireland. We were one of the first
clubs to admit women members, before the equality laws were ever heard
of.
St. Finbarr’s A.C. have supplied the County Athletic Board with four
Chairmen: John O’Connell, Michael Dooley (both R.I.P) Martin Lynch and Reg
Hayes. Reg Hayes went on to be elected National President of he Athletics
Association – a great honour for St. Finbarr’s A.C.
With our knowledgeable and dedicated coaches plus a hundred members we
are quite confident for the future.
Down through the years the club moved around to different training
venues but we always considered the Lough our home. It would be impossible to list all the
great achievements of the club so we go forward with our motto of the
three S’s: SEE IT, START IT, STAY WITH IT.
Come on the ‘Barr’s
Best wishes,
Paddy Buckley, Club President.
