Marathon Results

Just a couple of marathon results that I am aware of.

John Sheppard completed Boston in 3.52.42 and less than 2 weeks later ran a personal best in Limerick in 3.39.09. Great stuff! Hopefully he might take a break for a while now!

Also in Limerick another man running a personal best was Niall O Herlihy who knocked 18 minutes off his time for 3.14.11 and that despite running the bulk of the race on his own!

If you know of any other marathon performances please let me know and I’ll get them up on the site as these are just ones that I know of.

Babies & The Ballyandreen 5

Congratulations to some members who recently became parents. Martin and Claire McCarthy welcomed their 3rd boy and Claire celebrated by winning the Ballyandreen 5! Patrick O Rahilly became a dad for the first time and Eoin Shanaghy completed the recent additions also becoming a dad for the first time, both to baby girls.

The performances in this were excellent with John Meade 2nd and Paul Duggan 6th. Claire McCarthy was 8th overall and was 1st lady home. Declan Murphy put in a great performance to come 12th while Eoin O Keeffe fresh from his 6 months in central and south America showed he hasn’t lost any pace with his time of 30.34. Patrick O Rahilly who is just back from a long injury was just 3 seconds behind Eoin. The full results are as follows:

Bandon Half Marathon

It was not as easy to pick out club members in this one as the club was not listed on the results so apologies to anyone I may have missed.

Cathal O Connell’s marathon preparation seems to be on track as he finished with an excellent 3rd place in 74.21. It looks like he will be there or thereabouts again in the Cork Marathon! The ageless Willie Hayes was 20th in 87.50 while Eamonn Carroll was 26th in 89.32 and Fergal Sargent was 36th in 91.23. Rachel O Callaghan was 74th in 98.59 and Colin McTaggart was 192nd in 1.52.17, with Kitty Harrington-Buckley 238th in 1.55.53.

This was a very tough race with lots of hills so all were excellent performances.

Cork Marathon – Badly Needs Stewards

Hi guys,

As I’m sure you all know the Cork Marathon, Half Marathon and Team Relay takes place this bank holiday Monday 6th June. The organisers are badly in need of additional volunteers for stewarding. You don’t need any experience. Anyone who is not participating in the race who can give some time please do so as it is the volunteers that keep events like this going. If you can help contact Paddy Buckley (A Barr’s stalwart!) on 085 1480725 or 021 4545935.

Best of luck to all who are running and remember to wear the Barr’s colours to ensure you get great support around the course!

John Buckley Sports Graded T&F League 2011

In the summer of 2010, the inaugural series of Graded T&F Meetings took place at the UCC Mardyke Arena and CIT. The series proved very successful due in no small part to the unqualified support of the St Finbarr’s AC and its members. An average of 17 BARRS athletes attended the five summer events. We hope that those of you who competed last year will do so again in 2011 and look forward to seeing some new faces as well.

A series of six meetings is planned for Athletes male and female over 17 years on the day of the competition; the Shot, Discus, Hammer and 56lb Weights are limited to athletes over 18. Track events will, if necessary, be divided into separate races on the basis of performance, which could involve mixed races. Admission is €5 per meeting. Each athlete will receive a performance certificate and electronic timing will be used.

Due to ongoing reconstruction work at the Mardyke Arena, CIT will host the 2011 series.  Once again, here’s an ideal opportunity for members to compete with athletes from local clubs and ones further afield. With no Olympic Games or World Cup competition this year, these graded events should  provide a  welcome distraction during the height of the silly season.
