7th Paddy Desmond Memorial 4M, 2011-03-17, Ballinhassig

It was Paddy’s day on the double on March 17th as in excess of 250 runners made the short trip to Ballinhassig for the 7th Annual Paddy Desmond Memorial 4M Road Race hosted by Rising Sun A.C. This year’s event doubled up as the County Novice & Masters Roads Championships, a commonsensical approach that certainly contributed to the record turnout. Perhaps this kind of mutually beneficial arrangement will become more commonplace in the future. As they say, if you can’t beat ’em, join ’em! As with Ballycotton, unusually dry March weather meant that conditions were once again ideal for running. The race was well stewarded and the organisers made sure that participants were well catered for in the Marion hall afterwards.

In the men’s race, Wieslaw Sosnowski (Eagle) was first home in 20:56 with Chris Harrington (Leevale) second in 21:03 and Danny Smith (Ballynonty) third in 21:09. In the ladies race, Emma Murphy (St. Finbarr’s) was first home in a time of 24:12 confirming her return to form and adding to her recent victory in the ESB-Fota Island Hotel 5Km Road Race. Ann Marie Holland (Eagle) finished second in 24:41 with Michelle Nolan (Midleton) in third place just 9 seconds behind. John Meade and Paul Gallagher (St. Finbarr’s) continued their excellent run of form on the roads by finishing 4th and 7th overall.

In the Ladies section, Margo Dinan and Orla Crosbie finished 1st and 2nd in the F40 category. Mary Murphy finished 3rd at F50 while Marion Lyons was best at F55.

Daffodil Day, Friday, March 25th 2011

You make me feel so young. You make me feel so Spring has sprung.
Every time I see you bloom. I’m such a happy individual.

The moment that you peak. I wanna run and play hide-and-seek.
Wanna go and bounce the Moon. Just like a big toy Balloon

You and I are just like a couple of tots. Runnin’ around the Meadow.
Pickin’ up all those Forget-me-nots.

You make me feel so young. You make me feel there are Routes to be gone.
Lots of Bests to be done, and wonderful Times to be run.

And even when I’m old and gray. I’m gonna feel the way I do, here today.
Because, you make me feel so young.

23rd Tommy Ryan Memorial 5M, 2011-02-20, Carrigaline

After a hard winter of mud, snow and ice, the cross country season has finally come to a close. Sure, we’ve had our fair share of highs on the grass, but it’s good to be back on the hard stuff! Last Sunday, buoyed at the prospect of a pleasant trip, the road racing fraternity assembled in Carrigaline for the 23rd Annual Tommy Ryan Memorial 5M Road Race organised by Eagle A.C.

A strong contingent of 35-40 club members, many sporting the BARRS colours, contributed to a record turnout for this annual event. The race was run over a testy course in near ideal conditions. Sean McGrath (East Cork) and Lizzie Lee (Leevale) recorded fine victories in the Men’s and Women’s races respectively. Con Marshall, John Meade and Cathal O’Connell finished 3rd, 5th and 6th overall with just 10 seconds separating the three club mates. Kieran O’Sullivan finished 3rd in the M40 category, while Ken Devine also finished 3rd at M45. The ever consistent Eamon McEvoy was a category winner at M55. On the Women’s side, Ann Donnelly and Rachel O’Callaghan finished 4th and 5th overall, while Kathleen Kelly was 2nd at F35. Club stalwarts Rose Crockett and Marion Lyons finished 2nd and 3rd in the F50 category.

Finally, a big thanks our friends at Eagle AC for a well organised race and excellent post race refreshments. With plenty of time for recovery and ongoing preparations, the Athletics road show will now shift its attention to the upcoming Ballycotton ‘10’. Much coveted race numbers should be dropping into crowed letterboxes just about now. I can just imagine some people turning up in Ballycotton with voting cards having cast their race numbers in the election.

60th Anniversary Dinner Dance

St. Finbarr’s A.C. will hold its 60th Anniversary Dinner Dance and Awards presentation on Friday 25th February 2011 at 8pm in The Clarion Hotel, Lapps Quay, Cork. Tickets cost €40 each and are available from club committee embers and John Buckley Sports on Camden Quay. Current and former members, family and friends of the BARRS are all welcome to attend. We very much look forward to seeing you on the night.

Well Done Masters Champions

Congratulations to Con Marshall who raced to victory at the Munster Masters Cross Country 2010 in Dungarvan following his recent great performance in the County Seniors.   The success didn’t end there with Ann Donnelly and Mary Sweeney in first and second in the O50 category, Margo Dinan second in the  O40’s  and Marion Lyons third in the O55’s.

Article on Emma Murphy in the Evening Echo

A recent edition of The Evening Echo featured the following article by Noel Spillane on St. Finbarr’s runner Emma Murphy.

NICKNAMED the Fighting Viking on the US collegiate circuit because of her blond hair, Emma Murphy from Kenley Drive off the Model Farm Road has fond memories of her time in California.

She was on a $50,000-a-year tennis scholarship to the University of San Diego, was ranked number one on the college tennis team and won the “best player” in the state two years running.

As she says herself: “We were treated like royalty in America.”

After college she played professionally for a year, travelled around the States earning ranking points and getting into some good tournaments.

“The highlight of my pro career was winning a wild card to play in the $100,000 Acura Classic in San Diego.

“I lost in the first round to the 78th ranked player in the world, 7-5, 7-5 but it was one of the highlights for me to be rubbing shoulders with some of the tennis elite.

“Obviously playing Federation Cup for Ireland was a great experience too, we won our group much to the delight of our captain Gary Cahill.
