The Athletics Ireland Intermediate & Masters Cross Country Championships took place in Dunboyne, Co. Meath on 23rd of February 2014. It was a great day out for the BARRS ladies, who picked up a wad of Silver medals at Intermediate and Masters levels in the Inter Club and Inter County competitions. Despite a blustery day, the rain held off and ground conditions were more or less ideal for Cross Country running.
The ladies O/35 team featuring Denise Twohig, Anne Wolfe, Gillian Cotter, Ann-Marie Healy, Kitty Buckley and Eileen Buckley finished 6th in the O/35 Inter Club competition, while Ann-Marie Healy (#25) and Gillian Cotter (#28) helped the Cork team to a Bronze in the O/35 Inter Country competition.
Pride of place goes to Karina Teahan, Sinead Paley, Katherine Cashell, Margo Dinan, Ann-Marie Holland, Ailise McNulty and Rebecca McEvoy for their great performance in taking the Silver mdeal in the Intermediate Inter Club competition. Moreover, Sinead Paley, Katherine Cashell, Margo Dinan and Ann-Marie Holland were the first four to score on the Cork team thus garnering themselves another Silver medal in the Intermediate Inter Country competition.
The quartet of Mary Murphy, Marion Lyons, Frances Byrne and Mary Sweeney also took home Silver medals in the ladies O/50 Inter Club category, while Mary Sweeney’s performance garnered her a Bronze medal in the O/50 Individual category rounding of a very successful day out at the races for the ladies.
Our Masters men didn’t fare quite so well. A mounting casualty list left them unable to field teams in either the M35 or M50 category and there wasn’t enough time to rearrange entries on the day. Nevertheless, Cathal O’Connell could console himself with a Bronze medal in the O/50 Individual category, while Allen Whitaker, Cornelius Marshall, Trevor Woods and Eamonn McEvoy all finished well up the field in their respective categories. Our Intermediate men had a bit of an off-day. You could say they just didn’t turn up for the races.
The day passed off without incident and everybody was safely back home before 9pm. Well done to the BARRS ladies for their great performance in winning Silver at National Intermediate level and here’s to more success for the club in the future!
This event takes place on Sunday March 2nd and is hosted by Midleton A.C. The Masters categories are Men O35 & O50 and Women O35 & O45. Eligible athletes can compete at Novice and Masters, but Masters athletes can only score on one Masters team. Novice applies to all athletes who do not have an individual medal at a Novice Roads Championship.
This 4M race takes the route of the popular Midleton A.C. 5M road race. The Women start at 13:30 followed immediately thereafter by the Men. The Midleton Park Hotel will be race H.Q. with some light post-race refreshments. Please text your entries to the Competition Secretary by the closing date of 25-Feb-2014.
Well done to all who took part in the Dungarvan 10 yesterday. In what were horrific conditions, particularly early on there were some great performances and a lot of category prize winners. We had 3 men under 55 minutes, 11 under 60 minutes and there were 34 Barr’s athletes under 70 minutes.
Anne Marie Holland and Niamh Roe were 5th and 6th ladies home while Cathal O Connell (O50), Willie Hayes (O55) and Mick Dunne (O65) were men’s category winners and Margo Dinan (O45) and Mary Sweeney (O50) were ladies category winners. Ken Devine was 2nd (O45) and Sinead Paley 2nd (O40).

The National Intermediate & Masters Cross Country Championships 2014 will be held in Dunboyne, Co. Meath on Sunday 23rd of February. The venue is just off the M50 Dublin orbital, so we’ll be heading up on the day. If the numbers warrant it, we’ll hire a bus to transport athletes and supporters. So, please highlight the date in your diaries and inform the Competition Secretary if you intend to go. This is the last major XC event of the season and an opportunity to win individual and, or team medals at National level.
The Munster Juvenile Inter-County Relays, Junior and Senior XC Championships will be held on Sunday 12th January 2014 in Deansgrove, Cashel, Co. Tipperary. The Juvenile Relays will start at 11.30am followed by the Junior Women, Junior Men, Senior Women and Senior Men’s races in that order.
From Cork, take the M8 and bypass Cashel for Exit 7 (Cashel-Dundrum). At the Exit roundabout, take the first left (R639) back towards Cashel. The venue is about 1km from Exit 7 on the right.
Bring a dry change of clothes and umbrellas! Best of Luck to the Cork and BARRS team selections.
